About Sunbeern

Sunbeern helps you find outdoor seating that is likely to be sunny at a selected date and time. It covers a growing collection of Norwegian city centres and presents the result on an interactive map.

How the estimate works

The pipeline combines venue locations and building footprints with the calculated position of the sun. Building height and terrain information are used to project shadows, and nearby outdoor areas are classified as sunny, mixed, or shaded for each half-hour interval.

The calculations are prepared ahead of time and published as map data. Weather information is shown separately because a place can have an unobstructed view of the sun while the real sky is cloudy.

Data sources

Limitations

Sunbeern is an estimate, not a guarantee. Temporary structures, trees, umbrellas, inaccurate building heights, terrain sampling, clouds, and changes at a venue can make real conditions differ from the map.

Venue prices and opening information can change. Follow the linked venue menu or website before relying on those details.

Project and feedback

Sunbeern is an independently developed project. You can inspect the code or report incorrect map information through the Sunbeern project on GitHub.
